This book contains the stories of eight women who faced great trouble and were transformed by a combination of Eastern mindfulness practices and Western psychotherapy. After each story, you'll find the instructions for a mindfulness meditation. Taken together, these meditations are a course in what I call Mindfulness Psychotherapy. Try taking the course; perhaps it will help you heal your own emotions. For those who prefer to hear rather than read, an accompanying 70 minute CD provides four of the meditations.  See below for details.

Endorsements:

"Barbara Fishman's blend of Eastern and Western wisdom is masterful. Her ability to offer sophisticated concepts in highly readable pages is quite unusual. Her vignette's become alive as we find ourselves in her stories over and over again. If you want to improve your relationship with your own mind, read this book. When you have finished, read it again!"

Daniel Gottlieb, Ph.D., family therapist, radio host, and newspaper columnist

"A practical and inspiring book. Barbara Fishman writes clearly and forcefully about how mindfulness practice assists in the process of psychological transformation through psychotherapy."

Polly Young Eisendrath, Ph.D. Jungian analyst and author of The Resilient Spirit

Emotional Healing Through Mindfulness Meditation
A compact disk with four meditations

Whether you're an experienced or a first time mindfulness meditator, the CD illustrated on this page can help you learn how to use this 2,500 year old practice to heal your emotions. Over the past decade I have been investigating the relationship between psychotherapy and mindfulness meditation, and by now I'm convinced that, for the Westerner, healing the emotions through the use of both methods is more powerful than using either one alone. They fit together in many ways; both call for greater awareness, and through it, a conscious, increasingly precise inquiry into the nature of self. This path is described in Emotional Healing through Mindfulness Meditation.

The CD contains four mindfulness psychotherapy meditations. Each one begins with a reflection on meditation including; the power of stillness, the tool called focused awareness, the state of mind called equanimity or matter-of factness, and lastly, the experience of impermanence or ever-changing nature of this world. Each reflection is followed by instructions for a meditation that, with practice, can move you through your emotions into the peace that arises within - the peace that brings insight.

Resonance:   The New Chemistry of Love
The relationship for lovers of all ages

Think about your relationship for a moment. Do you have the intimacy you desire? Do you have the freedom needed for your personal journey? Resonance: The New Chemistry of Love proposes that it's possible to have both - if you balance the scales of independence and intimacy, commitment and self-interest.

In a clear and affirming voice, Barbara Miller Fishman tells the stories of couples she has seen, the pitfalls they encounter and the peak experiences of love they attain as they discover resonance. Dr. Fishman describes three types of union: merged, exchange, and resonant. In the merged union, couples give up much of their personal freedom, and so feel trapped. In the exchange union couples forego intimacy, and so feel lonely. In contrast, resonant couples support each other in the search for both intimacy and personal freedom as they manage power, express anger, handle money, and create their sexual relationship.
