About Barbara’s Teachers
Shinzen Young
Although Mindfulness is traditionally a Theravada technique, Shinzen was originally ordained in Japan as a monk in the Shingon tradition. He has studied and practiced extensively in other traditions, including Zen and Lakota Sioux Shamanism.
His innovative techniques are designed for teaching mindfulness in a precise and understandable way. He has led meditation retreats throughout North America over some three decades, and helped establish several centers and programs.
Barbara speaks appreciatively of Shinzen: “He is a meditator coach who could sense when I was ready to let go of fear, when I could explore my internal world, and when I could take those leaps that lead to the experience of Oneness and compassion.” See: Shinzen.Org for further information.
Jules Shuzen Harris Sensei
Sensei is the founder of the Soji Zen Center, a contemporary Buddhist Center in Lansdowne, PA. He provides instruction in Zen meditation, philosophy, and contemplation techniques, all designed to train the mind.
Soji Zen Center is part of the White Plum lineage which brings together elements of Japanese Soto and Rinzai traditions of Zen Buddhism to teach intensive awareness sitting practice (Zazen) and koan study (Zen riddles) to strengthen their technique. "Soji Zen Center is a place where people can go to slow down, meditate, and learn about the healing qualities of the mind," said Jules Shuzen Harris.
Barbara describes Shuzen Sensei as a powerful teacher. “Practicing Zazen with him allows access to a world beyond ideas and concepts. His skill as a teacher of Zen opens the gates to the connectedness of everything that is.” See: SojiZenCenter.com for further information.
