The meditation practice called “sitting” teaches how to calm the mind and relax the body.
Here are a few guidelines:
- Find a quiet place – not perfectly quiet but not noisy. Perhaps it’s aquiet room when others are asleep. Sit on a chair or a cushion with your back straight. And breathe.
- Make it your intention to sit for ten to fifteen minutes a day. Don’t be discouraged ifyou miss a day or a week. Self-blame makes it less likely you will return.
- On the in-breath say to yourself “one,” and on the out-breath, ‘two.” Continue until you reach “ten” and start again at “one.”
When you are aware that you’re lost in thought simply return to “one.” It takes time and patience for the mind to relax.
